Emma amuses me to no end, and by that, I mean both the novel and its title character. Every time I re-read the novel, I'm amazed anew by jokes I'm sure I didn't fully understand before. (All the stuff going on with Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax takes *several* re-reads to even begin to comprehend. Austen is just so brilliant.) Emma, Emma, Emma. How can someone possess such a sparkling wit, and such a huge blind spot, at the same time?! Ah. Silly girl. I would make fun of you, but you remind me so much of myself in some ways, I really can't. :D (If you're wondering, yes, my blabbing is drawing to a close.)

Well, I think it was mostly an unfortunate combination of things.

The first adaption I watched was Emma 2009 with Romola Garai, and I loved it. After hearing from multiple people that the GP version was awesome I decided to try it.

Then I made the mistake of watching the Winslow Boy the night before I watched Emma. Jeremy Northam plays a lawyer in The Winslow Boy, and I totally shipped his character and the oldest daughter. So I when I popped in Emma I went "What? Sir Robert is Mr. Knightley? No way!"

From then on things just went downhill. The movie was really short compared to a miniseries, Harriet looked like a giant, and Ewan Mcgregor in long floppy hair as Frank Churchill made me want to laugh everytime I saw him.

I think that if I had seen the GP version first I would have liked it better, but now I just don't enjoy it as much as Emma 09.

LOL, yes. I like long hair (Legolas!), and I like Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan!), but they did not work together in that movie. And you're right that Toni Collette wasn't right as Harriet. Harriet needs to be played by a girl that looks like a sweet little mouse with soft eyes. :D

Funny how you like the 2009 RG Emma and dislike the GP version--it's the other way around with me. I don't want to go into hating mode, so I'll just say the 2009 Emma was more vulgar than Mrs. Elton, and that really bugged me. LOL.

:) I did have a lot of issues with the RG Emma: complete lack of servants, Romola Garai's weird chicken walk, and the way they handled the ending with Harriet.

I don't think I will ever be completely happy with any adaption, unless of course the screenwriter consults me ;), but I did like more things in the Emma RG better than the Emma GP.

Hopefully I will like the 1996 version just as much or better!

Apologies for butting in like this (*waves*) but I just have to agree completely about The Winslow Boy. JN is amazing in it and definitely shippy with the eldest daughter! Really wish something had happened there. Oh, and I agree with you about the GP version. Try the KB version - it's great in every way! (In my opinion.)

Ooohhh...I sha'n't diss the Paltrow version since you like it so, but I honestly cannot stand her or Jeremy Northam (although I will admit he was great in The Winslow Boy; he's just not Mr. Knightley, IMO). A large part of my bias for the KB adaptation could possibly be that I saw it before I'd had any other Austen "experience", and I read the book afterwards. Mark Strong is too grumpy and yells a bit much, but he's more the type of man that I think Austen was going for, whereas Jeremy Northam and even Jonny Lee Miller in the newest travesty are too "cute guy next door". You know they're going to end up with Emma right away, whereas Mr. Knightley is supposed to be a surprise...

So refreshing to discuss Emma adaptions in a civilized manner, even when dealing with disliked versions. :)

There were many things I liked and a few things I disliked about both Emmas and Mr. Knightleys in the Paltrow and Beckinsale versions. I think, in the end, there is no way to nail Emma and Mr. Knightley absolutely perfectly for me.

I definitely know what it's like to watch a JA adaption before reading the book--that was me with P&P 1995. Special times, special times.

The 2009 Emma really bothered me, for many reasons, the last straw being Mrs. Elton carrying herself with polish and sophistication than Emma. That, IMO, was unforgivable. LOL.

I agree, Mr. Knightley and Emma getting together should be a surprise. Otherwise, it wouldn't have taken Emma herself so long to figure out she loved Mr. Knightley. :D

I don't think I could find a single solitary thing I liked about Gwyneth Paltrow or Jonny Lee Miller. *shudder* No offense, they just are not to my taste. I was very prepared to like Romola Garai, but she seems to be disappointing ever since Daniel Deronda. That must be her best role, because I have seen several of her films, and yet nothing to equal it.

As for Mr. Knightley, I am quite put out (still) that they did not cast RA as the man himself; I'm forever convinced he was cheated out of the role he was born to play, and that of an Austen hero. Now he's too old, I'm afraid...

Romola was horribly modern in her attitudes and mannerisms. I'm aware it was the director's fault, but really, running around with her neck stuck out, and TIDYING THE ROOM, putting things away?? And Mr. Woodhouse opening doors for himself??? Pardon the expression, but WTF???

Also, too, one thing I judge an Emma adaptation on is how it treats the subject of secrecy. Mr. Knightley and Emma are obviously supposed to be a surprise (at least in the beginning, before Frank Churchill arrives), but also the engagement between Frank and Jane. That's a huge part of the plot, and everything at the end hinges upon it, and yet the Paltrow version shoves it off in a neglected corner and plays up the romantic comedy atmosphere.

When I first heard they were making the 2009 version, I was concerned at first that RA would get the role and repeat his Thornton performance. I love Thornton moody and broody, but not Mr. Knightley. When I saw JLM, I realized RA would have been better no matter how he played Mr. Knightley. LOL!

Yes, the director directed Romola with far too modern a flair. It bugged me to distraction.

I agree, they didn't do Frank or Jane justice in the Paltrow version. Which is especially regrettable since they had Obi-Wan--I mean, Ewan McGregor. (I think I can safely say that Obi-Wan and Mr. McGregor are to me what Batman and Mr. Bale are to you. :D)

HAH! To be honest I wasn't in the least worried about whether he could pull off a different character. And while I haven't seen it for myself yet, I know he was in the very last episode of The Vicar of Dibley, and by all reports his character was a real sweetheart.

This is going to sound a bit silly, but I prefer not to have costume dramas set in wet, rainy countries like England to have this bright shiny warm/yellow cast to the footage...it makes it look like the south of France or like it's some fairytale. *shrug*

LOLOL! (Did we discuss Batman already, or are you going by the number of icons I made for those movies?) I totally understand your fondness for EM, and I haven't a problem with him (in fact I quite liked him in Miss Potter, though I could not STAND RZ!!).

I don't think it's silly to dislike a warm coloring on English landscape. I myself have always loved cool colorings, no matter where the movie is set.

I couldn't stand RZ, either. She looked as if she were about to burst all movie long, and it put me on edge. My face hurt just looking at her!

Same here! I love it when movies have a bluer cast; plus it's easier to icon (graphic making has made me MUCH more aware/picky about how movies are colored).

Honestly it was my brother who was all gung-ho about Terminator Salvation...we watched all the Terminator stuff (aside from the Sarah Connor Chronicles), and I wouldn't buy any of them for myself. He, however, plans on buying the CB one (my brother is a CB fan as well). Having said that, it is a pretty good movie.
